Boy meets beautiful girl. Girl and boy move to different cities, to attend different schools. Boy misses girl and writes a simple song to express how much he misses her. Song reaches number one on the US charts and boy becomes a star. The story in the 2005 folk guitar hit Hey There Delilah is one that many of us can relate to, yet it's safe to say that most of our love songs never made it to the top of the charts.
Hey There Delilah was made famous by pop-punk band the Plain White T's, and was a clear departure from their signature sound. Written by singer and Plain White T's guitar player Tom Higgenson, the song was inspired by a girl named Delilah that he and fellow bandmates had met. As the story goes, Higgenson's flirting with Delilah led him to tell her when they met that he had already written a song about her. He hadn't. After she expressed interest in hearing it, Higgenson began writing a song that started with lyrics about Delilah, but evolved to become a universal love song about lust and longing. Higgenson explains that the writing process didn't start with the Hey There Delilah chords, but rather the lyrics. This differed from the way the band's other songs were constructed.
How To Guitar
The beauty of the song comes from the way Tom Higgenson pairs simple fingerpicking guitar with his catchy melodic vocals. While the chords are relatively easy to play and common, the manner in which they are played give them their character.
