It's good to practice trying to tune the A string without any tools to help you. But until you can identify exactly how it is supposed to sound, you can use an A 440 tuning fork.

1. Gently tap the side of the tuning fork on your knee and place the stem of the fork on your guitar. You should now hear the tuning forks "A" tone resonating through the body of your guitar.

2. Now pluck your A (5th) string. Does it sound like your tuning fork? If it does, then perfect, you are ready for the next string. If not, turn the tuning peg down if the note is sharp and up if the note is flat. Once this string sounds like the tone from the tuning fork, you are ready to tune your other strings to this "in tune" A (5th) string.

3. Your next step is to press your finger on the 5th fret on the low E (6th) string and pick it. Now pick the open A (5th) string and compare the two tones. If they sound the same, then your string is in tune. If not, turn the E string tuning peg down if the note is sharp or up if the note is flat.

4. Repeat the last step but this time placing your finger on the 5th fret on the A (5th) string and picking the open D (4th) string. Tune the D string up or down until the two strings sound the same.

5. Now lets repeat these steps on the 5th fret on the D (4th) string and pick the open G (3rd) string. Tune the G string up or down until these strings sound the same.

For the next step you will have to do something a little different.

6. Press your finger on the 4th fret on the G (3rd) string and not the 5th fret this time. Now pick the G (3rd) string and then pick the open B (2nd) string. Tune the B string until they sound the same.

7. Next you will put your finger on the 5th fret of the B (2nd) string and pick this string and the high E (1st) string. Tune the high E string up or down until they sound the same.

The input stage of the guitar amp accepts the input signal either from the guitar pre-amp or directly from the guitar itself. Normally, there are input female jacks installed onto the amplifier where you attach the input signal cable. If the guitar signal is too weak to be fed into the guitar amp, the signal should first pass through a guitar pre-amp. It is very important that there is proper impedance matching between the available input signal impedance and specified guitar amplifier's input signal impedance. More often than not, signal impedance mismatch is the cause of deterioration of the final guitar sound on the loudspeaker.

Nowadays, there are many guitar amps, which have a pre-amplification stage incorporated into them. For such amps, you do not need to pass the guitar signal into a separate pre-amp. You can directly feed the signal into the amp itself.

Signal Modulation Stage

Plain in and plain out is not exactly the way normal electric guitarist likes it. He wants the guitar sound to be jazzed up, twangy, funky, heavily distorted etc. etc. For such sounds, the input signal has to under go modulation before they can be amplified. Say suppose the guitarist wants a heavy distortion akin to heavy metal rock sound. To get this type of sound, the input signal is fed into the signal modulation stage where the signal undergoes the required (but controlled) distortion. The same applies to other sound effects like wah-wah sound, reverb etc. Many guitar amps have equalizers and other tone control knobs, which also come under the signal modulation stage.

Signal Amplification Stage

The signal amplification stage is the 'business' stage of any guitar amp. It is here where the guitar sound is actually amplified. Good guitar amps will faithfully magnify the signal coming from the Signal Modulation Stage, i.e. the incoming signal will be the exact replica of this stage's outgoing signal, only that it will be of much greater amplitude. It is the 'business' of any amplifier (be it voice or guitar amp) to faithfully amplify the incoming signal.

Output Stage

This is the final stage of all guitar amps. Some guitar amps have the output driver stage as a part of the output stage, while some of them do not. In some cheap guitar amps, the outgoing signal from the signal amplification stage is directly fed into the loudspeaker. However, good guitar amps have proper signal conditioning output stage where it is ensured that output signal is properly matched to the input specifications of the loudspeaker.

One of the main techniques you will need to learn to develop your own Dobro style is string damping. You do not want extra noise from the strings, so if you have the slide on your pinky finger, you drag one of the other singers just after the slide using only enough weight on the strings to get rid of extraneous noise.

You will also be using your right hand to damp the strings that you do not want to sound if you pluck several strings but only want one or two to sound. This technique is called palm muting but it is really done by applying the side of your right hand to the strings as you play.

You may already know that when you play a conventional guitar you place your left hand fingers slightly behind the frets. With a Dobro you have the slide right above the fret when you play a note or chord. You will need practice to get that sound of sliding from one note to another, and you will need to work on producing vibrato by moving the slide back and forth rapidly.

Guitarists who know how to play a Dobro guitar will have a collection of alternate tunings at their fingertips. Remember, every time you change the guitar from conventional tuning you will need to learn all over again where the notes are on the fretboard. This is not as big and boring a job as it sounds. If you take care to learn alternate and open tunings one at a time, remembering where the notes are just comes by itself with practice.

Most slide and Dobro guitar players recommend Open G as a first tuning. You can quickly change to this tuning by changing both E strings down to D, then your fifth string down from A to G. Another useful tuning is Open D where you change your strings down to D A D F# A D.
